We both wanted to go to Trebah Gardens, which wasn’t that far away on the Helford estuary. We’d seen this garden several times on television and were particularly impressed with its collection of gunnera (or giant rhubarb) and large tree ferns. Ever since we’d lived in our bungalow, aptly named The Ferns, we’d been interested in ferns of all kinds, and had been gradually increasing our own collection in the shady parts of the garden. Consequently, we were especially keen to check out Trebah’s fern species as well as all the other exotic plants which thrived in the sheltered valley. We knew that dogs on leads were welcomed and didn’t want to waste any more time before getting to Trebah.
